Evaluations - Lung Function Testing

Lung function testing is used to screen for and evaluate many conditions including childhood asthma, adult-onset asthma, and lung disease, including emphysema, bronchitis, and lung cancer. Lung function testing may be used to gather baseline information prior to smoking cessation.

A variety of in-office evaluations for lung functioning are offered at Sweetwater Medical Associates. Your doctor will listen to your lungs with a stethoscope while you breathe. Spirometry is used to measures how much and how forcefully you breathe air out. A peak flow meter is a hand-held device used to manage asthma by monitoring the airflow through your bronchi. The peak flow meter measures your ability to expel air from your lungs under the best or peak conditions. By monitoring the changes in your breathing patterns your doctor can identify how well your lungs are functioning, the severity of your symptoms, and appropriate treatment. Your doctor may use blood tests or a pulse oximeter, a device that is simply placed on your fingertip, to determine the amount of oxygen in your blood. The results of lung function testing are used to help diagnose conditions, plan treatment, and monitor medical conditions and medication effectiveness.
